Assam Chief Minister Biswa Sarma on Monday requested industrialists in Mumbai not to hire illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in their factories as “cheap labour”.

He was speaking at a press conference in Mumbai after he met leaders from corporate houses including the Tatas, the Adani Group and the Mahindras.

Sarma said that there is a need to “strike at the roots” of the illegal migration from Bangladesh problem by not hiring such migrants, explaining how there are middlemen hired by the industry to get cheap labour from Bangladesh. The industry must decide against employing such labour, even if they are cheaper, Sarma said.

“Labourers who earlier worked in the textile industry in Bangladesh are coming to India and many textile factory owners within our country are incentivising this, giving a good amount of money for importing cheap labour illegally,” Sarma said.

Sarma said most of the labourers working in the Bangladeshi textile industry are from the majority community of Bangladesh.

He said that there has been a “massive increase” in undocumented illegal immigration into Assam after the political crisis in neighbouring Bangladesh and such illegal immigrants are likely to reach Mumbai, which could lead to law and order as well as security issues in India.
